چکیده

C ollecting and visualizing accessibility information are always challenging problems within the realm of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). A team of researchers at the University of Maryland have proposed innovative approaches that combine crowdsourcing, computer vision and machine learning to detect and visualize how accessible a particular street or sidewalk is. Tohme is one such approach for finding curb ramps remotely in Google Street View scenes. Based on experiments conducted by the team, the system demonstrates a performance comparable to a conventional manual approach but with a dramatic reduction in time and cost.

Evaluating Accessibility in Crowdsourcing GIS

A recent development in Geographic Information Systems is the use of crowd-sourcing to acquire and share information that was difficult to collect, organize and update in the past. Taking into consideration that the people entering data into the system might not have geographic training, an important concern is related to accessibility. In this paper we propose an algorithm for evaluating acces...

Lessons Learned from Crowd Accessibility Services

Crowd accessibility services for people with disabilities, driven by crowd-sourcing methods, are gaining traction as a viable means of realizing innovative services by leveraging both human and machine intelligence. As the approach matures, researchers and practitioners are seeking to build various types of services. However, many of them encounter similar challenges, such as variations in qual...

Crowd Sourcing Indoor Maps with Mobile Sensors

The paper describes algorithms required to enable the crowd sourcing of indoor building maps, i.e., where GPS is not available. Nevertheless to enable crowd sourcing we use the 3-axis accelerometers and the 3-axis magnetometers available in many smart phones and the piezometer in a Nike running shoe. Volunteers carry the sensors while walking around in buildings, and use some application on the...

An Initial Study of Automatic Curb Ramp Detection with Crowdsourced Verification Using Google Street View Images

In our previous research, we examined whether minimally trained crowd workers could find, categorize, and assess sidewalk accessibility problems using Google Street View (GSV) images. This poster paper presents a first step towards combining automated methods (e.g., machine visionbased curb ramp detectors) in concert with human computation to improve the overall scalability of our approach.

A Tale of Two Crowds: Public Engagement in Plankton Classification

“Big data” are becoming common in biological oceanography with the advent of sampling technologies that can generate multiple, high-frequency data streams. Given the need for “big” data in ocean health assessments and ecosystem management, identifying and implementing robust, and efficient processing approaches is a challenge for marine scientists. Using a large plankton imagery data set, we pr...
